MAS in Architecture and Digital Fabrication ![]() The MAS Digital Fabrication is a 1 year full-time programme and is structured as a series of teaching modules with an independent master thesis. Lessons within the modules are given in the form of lectures, practical workshops, and projects as the main modus for developing skills. Learning will be supported through one on one mentoring in studio, group critiques, symposia, and excursions.

Kurzbeschreibung | In the Design and Digital Fabrication Project students collaboratively design, fabricate and assemble a 1:1 architectural installation. The resulting project exploits the geometric freedom offered by computational design and showcases the potential of digital fabrication methods such as additive manufacturing for architecture.
Lernziel | Students develop custom scripts to design and to generate automatically the required data for a digital fabrication method. Computational form finding methods and computational optimization strategies are investigated to improve the performance of the structures. In a collaborative teamwork, the students explore how to integrate digital technologies into the continuous workflow from concept-phase to fabrication. Students acquire in-depth experience in working with large-scale 3D printing technologies and learn how to establish a continuous digital process chain from design to fabrication.
Inhalt | Information on this course will be provided shortly by the chair of Prof. Benjamin Dillenburger.

Kurzbeschreibung | The second term of the MAS programme is split into two consecutive design and fabrication projects. Students work collaboratively on all aspects from design to the digital / robotic fabrication of their 1-1 scale structure. Students acquire experience in project management, learn to organise their work packages and develop integrated digital fabrication processes.
Lernziel | Students tackle the challenge of integrating an innovative constructive system and robotic fabrication workflow into a digital design project with respect to a given timeline.
Inhalt | During the second ten weeks of term 2, the assignment is to design and fabricate a complex spatial timber structure. Students work collaboratively on all aspects from computational design to structural analysis and simulation, customised robotic tooling and fabrication. They acquire experience in 1-1 scale robotic construction using the unique facility of the Institute of Technology in Architecture equipped with four ABB IRB 4600 industrial robotic arms attached to a gantry system. |
