Kurzbeschreibung | The course is designed for researchers and doctoral students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in Future Cities LabGlobal (FCL Global). It offers guidance and training on particular research skills based on the thematic studies in a transdisciplinary research environment, academic writing and publication. |
Lernziel | The course aims to support researchers and doctoral students in the following aspects: - Enhance researchers' skills in building up their research frameworks and developing research methods based on the thematic research of FCL Global. - Intnroduce basic skills and academic writing and publication procedures. It will help researchers and doctoral students develop their academic careers. - Get systematic guidance and traning on the research methods developed by the FCL Global interdisciplinary research. This, researchers and students will improve their capabilit yto conduct studies independently. - Provide opportunities for researchers and students to undertand methods crossing disciplines. It will benefit collaboration and research sythesis within the individual and FCL Global modules. |
Inhalt | The course focuses on two main parts: introducing research methods developed upon the thematic research in FCL Global and systematic research skills training. Urbanisation, with its fast-surpassing city boundaries, is complex. lt breaks through the biophysical limits of the planet and threatens the environment and society in every walk of life. lts interconnection and complexity challenge traditional methods of understanding cities. They request new methods to more sufficiently analyse urban phenomena and emerging conditions. FCL Global studies urbanisation through thematic research modules. Each module combines various disciplines and tackles urban analysis via science, engineering, design and governance. Rooted in urban studies in the last ten years, thematic research in FCL Global develops innovative research methods. These methods integrate the most advanced technology and urban theories and are tested in real cases in Singapore and Zurich. The course will introduce these research methods systematically in ten sessions. Possible contents are, but do not exclude: - An Overview of Transdisciplinary and mixed methods research - Enabling the Science Design Loop - Using Virtual Reality in Research - Design thinking and the 'Charrette Method.' - State of the art in mapping techniques and geospatial analysis - Fundamentals of Agent-based modelling and complexity science - Network Analysis for urban design - Action research and De sign Workshops for stakeholder engagement - Case study as a research method - State Preference Surveys and Choice Modelling - Big Data analysis for urban research - Point cloud modelling as an alternative visualisation and analysis technique for large landscapes - Using semantic web technologies to develop urban ontologies - State of the art in Parametric modelling - Digital Twins - Ethnographie Research Methods - Historical Research - Research through Design - Architecture in Practice and Research Translation -Tactical Urbanism The second part of the course will train researchers and PhD/doctoral students in developing their research frameworks, preparing research proposals, and improving academic writing and publication. Small exercises, for instance, presentations, writing essays and group discussion, will be applied to practice these skills either in or after classes. Students and researchers' performances in this part will be used as references to grant the ECTS credits. |
