Chemical Nature of Nutrients and their Availability to Plants: The Case of Phosphorus
The lectures will spread over 13 Friday mornings in the autumn semester. The lecture will be organized in Eschikon, in the Group of Plant Nutrition at the Experimental station Eschikon, 8315 Eschikon-Lindau. The location of the experimental station Eschikon is given at http://www.ias.ethz.ch/researchstation/eschikon.
Based on up to date techniques, the course discusses the link between nutrients availability to plants and their chemical forms in soil/fertilizer/plant systems using phosphorus as an example. This class covers theoretical aspects, laboratory work, data analysis, and the analysis of publications.
Lernziel
At the end of this course students are familiar with the principles on which radioisotopic techniques and nuclear magnetic resonance are based to measure nutrient availability and forms, respectively. Students understand the advantages and limits of these techniques. They understand how the chemical form of a nutrient can affect its availability to plants, and the relevance of this information for developing crop ferilization schemes.
Repetition ohne erneute Belegung der Lerneinheit möglich.
Zulassungsbedingung
Students need to have visited the plant nutrition lectures in the 3rd and 6th semesters of the agricultural study program of the ETH (or bring an equivalent knowledge)
Zusatzinformation zum Prüfungsmodus
Final grade = oral presentation of publication: 25% of grade, oral presentation of experimental data: 25% of grade and written report on experimental data: 50% of grade
