AbstractAbsorption and scattering of electromagnetic radiation; transition probabilities, rate equations; Einstein coefficients and lasers; selection rules and symmetry; band shape, energy transfer, and broadening mechanisms; atomic spectroscopy; molecular spectroscopy: vibration and rotation; spectroscopy of clusters, nanoparticles and condensed phases
ObjectiveThe lecture is devoted to atomic, molecular, and condensed phase spectroscopy treating both theoretical and experimental aspects. The focus is on the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter.

Performance assessment

Performance assessment information (valid until the course unit is held again)
Performance assessment as a two-semester course together with 529-0432-00L Physical Chemistry IV: Magnetic Resonance
For programme regulations
(Examination block)
Bachelor's Degree Programme in Chemistry 2005; Version 27.03.2018 (Examination Block II)
ECTS credits8 credits
ExaminersG. Jeschke, M. Ernst, B. H. Meier, R. Riek, R. Signorell
Typesession examination
Language of examinationGerman
RepetitionThe performance assessment is offered every session. Repetition possible without re-enrolling for the course unit.
Mode of examinationoral 30 minutes
Additional information on mode of examinationCentral element (CE) for PCV:

- The CE is a mandatory written mid-term exam with 20 minutes duration. The exam will take place during the lecture. The mid-term exam must be taken without auxiliary material (no scripts, books etc.). The exact date of the exam will be announced during the first two weeks of the course term.

- The mid-term exam will be graded. If the mid-term exam performance is better than the performance in the final oral exam, the mid-term exam will account for 25% of the final PCV exam. If the performance on the mid-term exam is worse than the performance in the final exam it will not be counted for the final PCV grade.

- The mid-term exam is mandatory. Absence will be accepted only if it can be justified by a written doctor's certificate or by another exceptional circumstance. A mandatory make-up mid-term exam will be scheduled for those students who missed the mid-term exam due to a justified absence.

- If a student does not complete the CE, she/he must deregister from the examination to avoid being classified as a "no-show".
