Abstract | This lecture deals with the methodological basics and application of various environmental assessment tools.
Learning objective | After attending the lecture, students know environmental assessment tools, such as material flow analysis, risk assessment, and life cycle assessment. They can identify and apply the appropriate tool in a given situation. Also, they are able to critically assess existing studies.

529-0699-00L | Safety and Environmental Technology of Chemical Processes and Products | 0 credits | 2S | K. Hungerbühler, C. Bogdal, E. Capón García, F. C. I. Meemken, N. von Götz, Z. Wang
Abstract | This course comprises a series of seminars on current topics regarding environmental impact and safety of chemical products and processes. Invited national and international speakers from public and industrial research institutions present their latest developments and applications, and show future trends.
Learning objective | Giving the students the opportunity to experience recent research progress at first hand; encouraging participation in discussions with speaker and audience.
701-0996-00L | Substance-Oriented Risk Analysis | 4 credits | 3G | K. Hungerbühler, N. von Götz
Abstract | Basic understanding and application of the methodologies of Risk Assessment (RA) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for chemicals
Learning objective | Central to this lecture is the characterization and assessment of risks and environmental impacts of chemicals by means of Risk Assessment and Life Cycle Assessment methodologies. Emphasis is put on the scientific methods, their basis in natural sciences and their problem-oriented application over the whole life cycle of a chemical.
Content | Qualitative and quantitative methods of risk characterization: exposure modeling with sensitivity and uncertainty analysis; dose-effect relationship (long-term scenarios); risk assessment by combining exposure and effect assessments; use of molecular structure and physicochemical substance properties as descriptors of substance-specific hazard indicators regarding mobility, persistence, toxicity etc.; derivation of conceptual design criteria and decision options for inherent safety and ecoefficiency in chemical products; Life Cycle Analysis. One focal point is the methodology for human and environmental risk assessment, which will be conveyed by case studies.
