Kurzbeschreibung	Im ersten und zweiten Teil widmet sich die Vorlesung Soziologie II Perspektiven aktueller Stadtforschung (Monika Streule und Lindsay Blair Howe). Der dritte und vierter Teil der Vorlesung diskutiert Wohnen als vielschichtige kulturelle Praxis und Nachbarschaftsleben im Kontext des Rechts auf die Stadt (Marie Glaser und Ileana Apostol).
Lernziel	Die Vorlesungsreihe soll den Studierenden die Fähigkeit vermitteln, die gebaute Umwelt in ihrem gesellschaftlichen Kontext zu begreifen. Sie nähert sich dem Tätigkeitsfeld von Architektinnen und Architekten aus zwei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven: einer makro- und einer mikrosoziologischen.
Inhalt	Die Vorlesung Soziologie II widmet sich im ersten Teil zentralen Perspektiven aktueller Stadtforschung. Es werden theoretische Zugänge vorgestellt und anhand konkreter Fallbeispiele diskutiert. Zuerst wird eine postkoloniale Perspektive aktueller Stadtforschungsdebatten vorgestellt und durch Beispiele aus der Forschungspraxis illustriert. Als Einführung in wissenschaftliches Arbeiten werden verschiedene Methoden zur Analyse von Urbanisierungsprozessen an Beispielen aus Mexiko-Stadt, Tokyo und San Francisco diskutiert (Dozentin: Monika Streule). Im zweiten Teil der Vorlesung werden transdisziplinäre Forschungsprojekte und Planungsverfahren durch Beispiele aus Süd- und Ostafrika vorgestellt (Dozentin: Lindsay Blair Howe). Im dritten Teil der Vorlesung werden verschiedene Wohnformen diskutiert (Dozentin: Marie Glaser) und im vierten Teil der Vorlesung werden Urbanität und die Lebensqualität in der Nachbarschaft in den Kontext des Rechts auf die Stadt gestellt (Dozentin: Ileana Apostol).

Kurzbeschreibung	Urban research is confronted today urbanization processes that unfold far beyond the realm of agglomerations and urban regions. In this research seminar, we will present some of the most recent and cutting-edge research investigations into extended urbanization and discuss some of the most exciting articles in this fascinating new field of urban research.
Lernziel	The goals of this course are: a) to better understand contemporary urbanization processes across the planet, b) to get insights into methods and procedures of urban research in architecture and social sciences, c) to learn to read and discuss scientific articles.
Inhalt	Urbanization has achieved a planetary reach. Novel patterns of extended urbanization are crystallizing across diverse environments, in agricultural areas, in the space of what may appear to be wilderness, and even in the oceans. They are challenging inherited conceptions of the urban as a bounded zone and a dense settlement type. Process of extended urbanization includes the formation of complex and multi-scalar relationships between centers and peripheries, the blurring and re-articulation of the urban fabric, the production of functionalized logistics spaces, and the progressive operationalization of landscapes around the world. These observations suggest a radical rethinking of inherited concepts and cartographies of the urban, at all spatial scales, encompassing both built and unbuilt spaces. This elective course is organized as a research seminar. In each lecture, researchers will present and discuss with us their most recent results of their ongoing research in various parts of the globe, such as Delhi, Amazonia (Brazil), the North American corn belt, Malaysia, the West African Corridor, Johannesburg, Arcadia, the Atacama Desert (Chili) and the North Sea. Supplementary, we will read and discuss a selection of scientific articles on these topics.

Kurzbeschreibung	Masterwahlfacharbeiten im Fach Soziologie sind schriftliche Arbeiten, die sich an den Kriterien des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens in den Sozialwissenschaften orientieren. Die Studierenden werden in ihrer Arbeit intensiv angeleitet und betreut.
Lernziel	Neben der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung besteht ein Lernziel darin, dass die Studierenden sich im korrekten Verfassen eines wissenschaftlichen Textes üben, sowohl was den Aufbau, die Form, die inhaltliche Kohärenz und die wissenschaftliche Gültigkeit betrifft.
Inhalt	Den Untersuchungsgegenstand bilden "Urbane Qualitäten" aus der Perspektive der konkreten Alltagserfahrungen von Nutzern und Bewohnern. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Untersuchung und Analyse der Wechselwirkung zwischen städtebaulich-räumlichen Prozessen und der konkreten Erfahrung und Wahrnehmung von Urbanität im Alltag mittels qualitativen Interviews.

Kurzbeschreibung	As part of the ‘Doctoral Programme in Landscape and Urban Studies’, the ‘Research Methods in Landscape and Urban Studies' seminar offers PhD students at the D-Arch an application-oriented introduction into the variety of methodologies and tools available to conduct research on the (built) environment at the urban and territorial scale.
Lernziel	The seminar's objective is to introduce PhD students to the multitude of research methodologies, tools, and techniques within the fields of urban studies, urban design, territorial planning and landscape architecture. Based on the conveyed knowledge, the seminar ultimately aims at enabling PhD candidates to critically assess existing methods and tools, and to refine and develop an academically sound research framework for their own studies.
Inhalt	The seminar is organised along four modules that are arranged according to the PhD classes' particular needs: A: Methodology Module >>> Introduction of a research methodology/approach by an expert + exercise and discussion / moderated by doctoral programme coordinator. (3 per semester) B: Framework Module >>> Sessions organised and conducted by doctoral programme coordinator and invited experts to develop a first overview of different theories on landscape and urban studies (with this semester a specific focus on the Anthropocene and living systems). (3 per semester). C: Techniques Module >>> Introduction into research techniques and tools / organised by doctoral programme coordinator and respective experts. These modules will make students familiar with technical aspects such as academic writing, or the the use of GIS software and visual analysis (3 per semester) D. Doctoral Reviews >>> Presentation and discussion of individual PhD projects organised by the doctoral program coordinator with external guests (2 per semester).
Voraussetzungen / Besonderes	The online seminar is jointly organized by the coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in Landscape and Urban Studies, and the I-LUS faculty. Although located at the D-Arch, the seminar is open to all doctoral students (at ETH) who are involved or interested in research at the urban and territorial scale. This seminar is complementing the gta doctoral colloquiums on Thursday afternoons.
