AbstractStudents deepen their basic understanding of systematics and acquire exemplary knowledge of selected organism groups using online tutorials. They then carry out their own determinations on excursions to different habitats and apply current methods of biodiversity detection. In workshops, the collected data are analyzed and discussed with a view to various ecological questions.
ObjectiveThe students are able to:
- show the relationship between phenotypic characteristics and taxonomic classification for different groups of organisms
- identify key criteria for the taxonomic classification of selected organism groups and carry out classifications
- explain Biodiversity Assessment Methods including their applications and limits, based on their own experience
- make quantitative estimates of biodiversity in selected habitats based on their own data surveys
(mehrere, teils parallele Gruppenveranstaltungen)
4) Datenworkshops mit Datenauswertung inkl. Präsentation der Daten, Diskussion und Ausblick. (Veranstaltungen in Gruppen, jeder Student nimmt an einem Workshop teil, Zuteilung aufgrund der besuchten Exkursionsmodule)
Prerequisites / NoticeVorlesung 551-0001-00L Allgemeine Biologie I & 701-0243-01L Biologie III: Ökologie

Dez in LV Umweltsysteme II

AbstractIn the mandatory internship outside of ETH, the students in Environmental Sciences learn about how environmental issues are handled professionally through their own practical work and by applying the knowledge they acquired. They will analyse complex environmental problems on scientific, technical and social levels and develop solutions in conjunction with social actors.
ObjectiveThe students experience political/legal, economic, social and psychological aspects in an professional working environment and acquire key skills such as communication and planning skills, cooperation with non-specialists and recognition of relevant aspects. Further they make useful contacts for starting their careers.
ContentThis internship takes place outside of ETH. The main locations of an internship are the following: environmental consulting firms, planning and engineering offices, industrial and service companies, public administration, environmental organisations (nature conservation and protection, development cooperation).

The internship is a mandatory part of the two-year Master programme and lasts for at least 18 weeks (30 credit points). The internship agreement is a condition for the performance assessment of the internship.

The students look for a placement themselves.
