401-2110-23L | Sums of Squares Number of participants limited to 12. Mainly for fourth semester Mathematics BSc students. | 4 KP | 2S | M. Akka Ginosar
Kurzbeschreibung | Introduction to (algebraic) number theory via representing integers as sum of squares.
Lernziel | Introduction to number theory, in particular to algebraic number theory.
Inhalt | This seminar is intended for fourth semester bachelor’s students that haven’t previously learned any number theory. We will mainly follow chapters 3-8 of the textbook “A Journey Through the Realm of Numbers”, https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-55233-6 , and will hopefully address complementary topics at the end of the semester.
Literatur | “A Journey Through the Realm of Numbers”, https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-55233-6
Voraussetzungen / Besonderes | We will only assume the students have completed the first three B.Sc. semesters’ obligatory courses. We will give preference to fourth semester students and to students who have never taken any number theory courses. In addition to giving two one-hour talks, the participants are expected to read about ten pages each week, and regularly solve standard exercises and programming tasks (via SageMath). No prior knowledge in SageMath is required.

Kurzbeschreibung | Introduction to Linear Algebra and Numerical Analysis for Engineers. The contents of the course are covered in the book "Introduction to Linear Algebra" by Gilbert Strang (SIAM, 2003). MATLAB is used as a tool to formulate and implement numerical algorithms.
Lernziel | To acquire basic knowledge of Linear Algebra and of a few fundamental numerical techniques. The course is meant to hone analytic and algorithmic skills.
Inhalt | 1. Vectors and vector spaces 2. Solving linear systems of equations (Gaussian elimination) 3. Orthogonality 4. Determinants 5. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors 6. Linear transformations 7. Numerical linear algebra in MATLAB 8. (Piecewise) polynomial interpolation 9. Splines
