Abstract | What is the materiality of the digital and what significance do digital media have for the experience, use and production of real environments? The course discusses in lectures and a one-day symposium works of art and architecture that explore or redefine relationships between digital, physical and social spaces.
Learning objective | Knowledge of the recent history of art and architecture as well as media theory.
Content | What is the materiality of the digital and what significance do digital media have for the experience, use and production of real environments? The lecture class examines the material dimensions behind seemingly immaterial flows of data, but also the question in which different ways new information and communication technologies change reality. What do works of art and architecture teach us about interconnections between private and public spaces with personal devices, sensors and data - and what can we learn from them about the infrastructures of the digital? How do artists and architects work within the new hybrid environments defined by different (also sometimes hidden) actors? Discussed are works of art and architecture that were produced since the middle of the 20th century, and which explore or redefine the relationships between digital, physical and social spaces.

Abstract | Independent thesis on a monographic or thematic topic within the scope of the History of Art and Architecture.
Learning objective | The objective is to write an independent thesis on a monographic or thematic topic within the scope of the History of Art and Architecture. The focus is to thus exemplify a comprehensive view of the approach and methods towards the modern History of Art.
Content | The aim of the elective course paper is to discuss a topic freely selected from the field of architectural history, in agreement with the assistant lecturer(s). In addition to original ideas, positions taken in the history of research on the subject should also be discussed. It is important to use the correct scholarly format and clear language. The paper should be approximately 36,000 characters in length and should also include as much pictorial material as needed. At the beginning and in the end the paper will be discussed in detail.
Prerequisites / Notice | Students who are interested to do a Thesis Elective have to arrange an appointment at the chair. Elective works can be realized in various media (text, video, photography, performance). Supervision by academic staff of the chair of History of Art and Architecture, Philip Ursprung. |
