Abstract | Means and potentials of urban design are depicted from different perspectives to illustrate how the city can be designed as a sustainable and humane environment. For this purpose general basic principles and specific methods of urban design are going to be presented. The lectures will be given by members of the chair and invited speakers.
Learning objective | This lecture series imparts advanced expertise in urban planning. The main focus is to illustrate the complex manner in which various themes are embedded in the everyday practice of planning and design by addressing pressing questions of contemporary urban design practice and theory. The goal is to communicate a broad-based systemic knowledge base, which helps enable students to synthesize and evaluate complex urban design and planning problems.
Content | Based on the lecture series 'Design and Strategy in Urban Space I' the spring semester imparts further skills in urban design and is structured in two parts: Part 3: Urbanisation processes More and more people on earth are living in urban spaces, since 2007 already more than half of the population. The third part of the lecture series is dedicated to the urbanisation processes of the 20th and 21st century. Based on a global observation of the amalgamation of cities and countrysides, the urbanisation of Switzerland is looked at and options for action by design and strategy for a sustainable development of these urban territories are presented. Part 4: Control and Laisser-Faire The fourth part of the lecture series deals with the continuous quest for an ideal balance between top-down planning and bottom-up freedom for stakeholders in the city. Guest lecturers with professional experience present urban designs, projects, tools, strategies or processes and put them up for further discussion.
