| Kurzbeschreibung | The lecture offers a survey of the historical trajectories taken by the countries of the Indian subcontinent from the 17th century to the turn of the 21st century. The thematic foci include, but are not limited, to an examination of the question whether or or not there was a pre-European South Asian modernity. | ||||
| Lernziel | Through this course students are acquainted with the history of one of the most important world regions. The objective is not only to introduce participants to a richly diverse civilization, they are also encouraged to look at interrelations and make comparisons with the West. Through this approach their knowledge of European history is contextualised in a global framework while simultaneously their intercultural sensitivity is being trained. | ||||

| Kurzbeschreibung | Fundamentale Prozesse wie die Industrialisierung, die Urbanisierung, die Demokratisierung, die Säkularisierung und die Individualisierung haben Europa seit dem 19. Jahrhundert umgepflügt. Die Vorlesung fragt, ob ein einheitlicher Modernisierungsvorgang vorliegt, oder ob lokale Sonderwege dominieren. Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Schweiz. | ||||
| Lernziel | Am Ende dieser Vorlesung können Studierende: (a) die wichtigsten Veränderungen des "langen 19. Jahrhunderts" in Europa benennen; (b) deren langfristige Wirkung erläutern; and (c) diese Veränderungen in Bezug setzen zu aktuellen globalen Entwicklungen. | ||||
| Inhalt | Thematische Schwerpunkte bilden u.a. die Industrialisierung in England, die Urbanisierung in der Schweiz, die Demokratisierung in Deutschland und die Indivdualisierung in Frankreich. | ||||
