072-0101-00L | Module 1: Foundations of Digitalisation Does not take place this semester. Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction. | 1 credit | 2G | A. Paulus, S. Menz
Abstract | Key terms: Atoms and bits, transparency and manipulation
Learning objective | Independently of the building industry, Module 1 initially provides information about the characteristics of digitalisation through its principles and rules, enabling the participants to independently recognise the short-term and long-term changes that are resulting from it.
Content | The principles involved in digitalised business and society are illustrated using experience from fields that have already been changed, such as the hotel industry and the music industry. The switch from materially based collaboration to data-supported networking conflicts with established methods, tools and structures. Weaknesses in the relevant legislation may even become apparent — such as the uncertainties involved in liability issues for self-driving robots. Parallels with the building industry are developed on this basis in order to identify effects involving transparency, the acceleration of business processes and questions of property and liability.

072-0102-00L | Module 2: Automation Does not take place this semester. Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction. | 1 credit | 2G | A. Paulus, S. Menz
Abstract | Key terms: Substitution or disruption, organisation and “lean management”
Learning objective | Module 2 presents the origins and breadth of applications involved in automation and the conditions it requires, enabling participants to recognise the potential of these areas in a value-creation chain in which software and machines take over specific working steps.
Content | Ever since the first industrial age, the automation of repetitive processes has been continuously transforming the processes and competences involved in the manufacturing industries. In relation to the building industry, it represents both an opportunity and a risk, since software is increasingly responding to individualised aspects of the planning, construction and usage of buildings. An introduction to the scripting language Python is intended to familiarize participants with thinking in terms of data.

072-0103-00L | Module 3: Networking Does not take place this semester. Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction. | 1 credit | 2G | A. Paulus, S. Menz
Abstract | Key terms: Networked data, semantics and file formats
Learning objective | Module 3 provides the data-technical basis for digitally networked collaboration, enabling the participants to understand and evaluate the principles of data architecture, as well as details of file formats, attributes, servers and cloud-based systems.
Content | The way in which data are structured in a digitalised sector of industry has tremendous effects on the people involved and on the ways in which they work. Well-structured data are more easily interpreted by software, leading to shorter information exchange cycles and information analysis, and consequently affecting project processing. Poorly structured data and interfaces, on the other hand, lead in the long term to data losses and a need for costly reorganization work. The module explains and positions currently familiar open data formats such as IFC, BCF and COBie.

Abstract | Key terms: Business models, performance and “business intelligence”
Learning objective | Using examples, Module 5 identifies value-creating activities in the lifecycle of a building, enabling participants to recognise and name the effects of digitalisation. In addition, the participants present their own theses in Module 5.
Content | Digitalisation is calling the foundations of value creation into question. The current status quo is being compared with the potential offered by digitalisation, and the first winners and losers are being identified. One challenging phenomenon is robot-aided manufacturing, for example. New business fields are also opening up as a result of “business intelligence,” which supports project managers in their decision-making processes. At the end of the semester, the participants will present the state of their own theses on digitalisation and open them up for discussion.

072-0402-00L | Module 2: Acquisition Only for CAS ARC in Unternehmensführung and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction. | 1 credit | 2G | A. Paulus, S. Menz
Abstract | Key terms: Competence, communication and network
Learning objective | The aim is to become able to analyse and implement the processes and instruments used for acquisition in one’s own company.
Content | Acquisition represents a separate project in entrepreneurial activity, since all the activities involved in obtaining a commission fall under this term. The “acquisition” module focuses on imparting basic knowledge of networking and professional dialogue. Both of these tools require an assessment of one’s own situation with regard to competence, resources and customer relations. The conversation is a direct interaction: everyone involved is both an addressee and also basically an equal interlocutor. Networking can be learned: situational “small talk,” social competence and a healthy ability to communicate can be learned.

Abstract | Key terms: Planning, positioning and identity
Learning objective | The aim is to become familiar with the tools used in marketing and able to use them in specific situations.
Content | Marketing means orienting company activities towards market demands. Communication between suppliers, clients and the competition plays the decisive role here. The “marketing” module illustrates the foundations of marketing planning for architects and engineers. The essential definitions are provided and the core tasks involved in marketing are described. On this basis, the way in which a marketing plan is developed is explained and strategic and operational marketing planning is described in detail. The topics of branding and the opportunities represented by press and public relations work for architects and planners round out the “marketing” module.

072-0404-00L | Module 4: Financial Management Only for CAS ARC in Unternehmensführung and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction. | 1 credit | 2G | A. Paulus, S. Menz
Abstract | Key terms: Cost accounting, budgeting and controlling
Learning objective | The aim is to become able to analyse one’s own company’s financial resources in detail, interpret key parameters for the current situation and test them.
Content | Financial management means achieving the target company output with costs that are as low as possible, and in the longer term to create secure asset and capital structures. Abstract | Key terms: Strategy, potentials and digital planning
Learning objective | The aim is to become familiar with the current practical work involved in IT in planning companies and be able both to analyze the specific challenges it implies and also to infer one’s own prospects for development in this context. In addition, thought needs to be given to the way in which the value creation provided by digitalisation influences one’s own company.
Content | IT refers on the one hand to information and data processing in a company, and on the other to the hardware and software components needed for the purpose. This “information technology” module focuses on potential strategies for company management in the IT field. The focus is not on the use of any individual programme, but on taking conscious decisions for or against IT components in one’s own company in order to obtain helpful support in one’s everyday work. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risk of this strategy suggest possible potentials. The participants will present their own theses on entrepreneurship and open them up for discussion in the plenary session.
