KurzbeschreibungArchitecture is already saturated in images. In order to skilfully articulate the digital cosmos of today we need creative writing and code.

The problem addressed in this course is how to allow the digital cosmos to find its voice, and how you as architects can inhabit this voice to speak both freely and carefully, both playfully and seriously, from word-building to world-building.
LernzielNo creative writing experience is required; you can forget everything you have learned. We will use experimental writing modes, movements and exercises to find ways to develop agility and grace in writing by testing the motility of concepts such as light and matter, gravity and grace, night and day.

Each week there will be a lecture followed by a group discussion. There will be a short text to read each week, and a short writing experiment to do. Readings will be provided online.

You will form your own voices, forms and styles. We will start with the initial theme of SATURATION. The digital cosmos is saturated. Saturation is extreme. Saturation is overwhelming. Saturation is beyond what is required.

The task of the architect-writer here is to inhabit and write with this saturation; to find voices to properly articulate the saturated world. This requires skill and balance; gravity and agility; humour and lightness. During the course you will be guided through the process of writing texts which playfully inhabit the styles of the following: fragments of ancient epic poetry, Renaissance sonnets, modernist avant-garde poems and contemporary voices.

KurzbeschreibungThe course introduces the interplay between machine learning and the architectural design process. It is about how architects can navigate a probabilistic design space and what kind of questions to ask. It also shows how integrating learning from data to discover patterns and holistically manipulate the data entities with design.
Lernziel- Students learn an introduction of an applicative perspective of using machine learning in design.
- Students learn how feature engineering can be connected to the design elements and how that improves the quality of results.
- confronting the digital modeling with the “thinking” of machine learning.
- Students can use geometry as an expression to visualize and conceive the machine learning process.
- Connect these geometric expressions with architectural design elements in informational spaces.
- The course starts with introductory lectures with intuitive tools and finishes with individual experiments to design architectural models.
InhaltThis course shows the complex relativity between the data’s sharp borders and its boundaries, where morphing anything is possible, and anything may be related or connected. Architects can manipulate and design the feature engineering algorithms of machine learning and connect them to the design process to improve the quality of results. Basic introduction of Rhino and Grasshopper will be instructed to use the basic interfaces’ functions. Coded files with examples will be used throughout the course.

- Information Space.
- Read geometry as particles and waves.
- Implicit vs parametric.
- Machine learning aided design.
- Embody values of high dimensional elements.
- Obstacles and distance measurements.
- What is the knowledge of needed tools inside Rhino and Grasshopper for this course?
- Rhino Interface, use basic drawing commands (Point, Line, Surface, Extrude, Solids Boolean operations, Meshes).
- Grasshopper Interface, know basics (connecting components, assign geometry from rhino, basic components, Tree and lists, export).
- Introduction - ANN - Self-organizing map – Principle component analysis.
- Non-linear morph between geometries.
- Generate in-between design alternatives.
- Design a conceptual building form in a probabilistic space.

KurzbeschreibungThis studio works on the idea that a substantial understanding of
today’s technology (internet of things, big data, machine
intelligence ...) changes the perspective to architectural theory
and will result in different architectural designs and building
constructions.
Lernziel1) Identification and understanding of the challenges of today’s
technologies;
2) techniques of working within the plenty of the internet;
3) a methodology to design digital architectures;
4) understanding of the shift from hard building construction to soft building applications, and
5) an understanding of the importance of becoming a literate digital persona in order to be an architect today.

KurzbeschreibungInformationstechnologien für Architekten. Dritter, vertiefender Teil.

064-0016-23LPhD Colloquium Theory of Information Technology for Architects Information 2 KP2KL. Hovestadt
KurzbeschreibungInformation technology plays an increasingly important role in research. To meet this challenging development, it is not only important to acquire respective skills, but also to consider and understand information technology in what sets it apart from other gestalts of technics (like mechanics, dynamics, or thermodynamics).
LernzielThe aim of this colloquium is to counter an observable tendency, that proportional to the degree in which students master practical skills in computing, they increasingly submit uncritically, in their understanding and framing of problems, to the dictation of schemata and templates implemented by technical systems.
InhaltThe starting point for this colloquium is to comprehend computing not in terms of skills, but as a literacy which we can experience emerging today. Like in the case of writing as well, computing cannot exhaustively be reduced to either logics, grammar, arithmetics, or analytics. Rather, computation, if comprehended as a literacy, relates to any of the established categories of learning and raises questions of an architectonic kind. This colloquium draws from the principal richness of cultural forms of knowing and learning and thematizes approaches to formulate a theoretical stance on information technology for architects which is driven by and resting on the actual reality of computability today. In this, it is complementary to those theory courses on technology offered by the historical disciplines at ETH.
Voraussetzungen / BesonderesTo benefit from this course, you should have a practical affinity to technics, as well as an abstract interest in information technology in its comprehensive cultural context.
