052-0813-17L | History, Criticism and Theory of Architecture: Architectural Machines VII ![]() | 2 credits | 2S | L. Stalder
Abstract | The seminar analyses the conditions of contemporary architectural production. In doing so, the importance and meaning of architectural conventions for the design, construction as well as for the transformation of single buildings is systematically challenged.
Learning objective | The seminar aims at a critical analysis of both material and ideological conventions of the architectural practice. On the basis of the historical analysis the students will acquire instruments for a critical examination of the conditions of the current production of the built environment, in order to develop a sovereign theoretical position on the contemporary architecture.
Content | The seminar will deal with the conventions of the contemporary architectural practice. The proposed topics should be researched out of a twofold, historical as well as systematic perspective. A detailed description of the syllabus can be found on the homepage of the professorship: http://stalder.gta.arch.ethz.ch/seminarien.php
052-0815-17L | Seminar Architectural Criticism: City and Architecture ![]() | 2 credits | 2G | C. Schärer Basoli, L. Stalder
Abstract | The seminar investigates the potential and the limitations of architectural criticism. The course comprises theoretical reflection, discussions of architectural objects, as well as work on texts.
Learning objective | The objective of the course is twofold: On the one hand, students will get to know and to apply a critical approach to architecture by means of such media as oral discourse, written reviews, and the image as a tool of criticism. On the other hand, the practice of architectural criticism itself shall be reflected upon by reading and discussing theoretical and historical texts on the subject.
Content | The seminar is structured in three sections. In a first step, theoretical foundations will be established based on reading and discussing seminal texts, as well as guest lectures by established critics. A second phase will include site visits of selected buildings in order to develop a critical vocabulary based on immediate spatial experience. The third part will be devoted to the craft of writing; students will be authoring their own arguments and hold a public discussion.
Lecture notes | Will be handed out at the beginning of the semester.
052-0831-17L | Special Problems of Modern City Planning in Central Europe Does not take place this semester. | 2 credits | 3G | L. Stalder
Abstract | The course deals with formation, dissemination and critique of modern urban development in Central Europe.
Learning objective | The students prepare a clearly defined, historical urban development theme and present it to their colleagues in a comprehensible way, with text and drawings/pictures. Discussions should establish a relation between the historic materiall and the presence condition. The main idea of the course is to discuss the canonical master story of the formation of the city in the 19th and 20th centuries by analyzing the concepts of the protagonists and their critics at the same time. Hence, a correspondingly and more complex understanding for modernism should be enhanced which improves the development of a suitable comprehension on how making architecture nowadays.
Content | The course deals with the formation of different varieties of modern urban design and construction in Central Europe at the ratio of global context. The focus is set on urbanistic theories, designs and built interventions in the historic city which continuously are analysed and construed in correlation to contemporary exemplification, critiques and theories.
