KurzbeschreibungResearch colloquium
LernzielThe Zurich Theoretical Physics Colloquium is jointly organized by the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich. Its mission is to bring both students and faculty with diverse interests in theoretical physics together. Leading experts explain the basic questions in their field of research and communicate the fascination for their work.

KurzbeschreibungThe course begins with some mathematical background like fibre bundles. It covers the quantum Hall effect from various perspectives (phenomenology, heuristic explanation, role of disorder, Landau Hamiltonian, Kubo formula, Chern numbers, index of a pair of projections, bulk and edge). Also discussed: Topological insulators and their indices; the Kitaev table. If time permits, quantum pumps.

InhaltThe course begins with some mathematical background like fibre bundles, connections, holonomy and curvature. It covers the quantum Hall effect from various perspectives (phenomenology, heuristic explanation, role of disorder, Landau Hamiltonian, Kubo formula, Chern numbers, index of a pair of projections, bulk and edge). Also discussed in a similar vein: Topological insulators and their indices; the Kitaev table. If time permits, quantum pumps.
